Different Types of DC Generators

On the other hand, self-excited generators get their field current from the generator itself. These generators are usually categorized into three types:

  • Series DC generators: Series DC generators: In this type, the field winding is connected in series with the load, meaning they share the same current. The voltage rises with the increase of the load current.
  • Shunt DC generators: The field winding of these generators is connected in parallel with the load. It provides almost constant voltage and is used for charging batteries and feeding nearby loads.
  • Compound DC generators: These generators use both series and shunt windings to improve voltage stability when the load changes. Cumulative compounds are better for voltage regulation in lighting and power supply, while differential compounds are designed for applications needing a steady current, like arc welding.
