The term “power factor” describes how well electrical power is being used; experts may minimize wasted energy and improve power factor by carefully arranging inductive and resistive loads.

Types of inductive banks

The kind of power system being examined and the exact testing criteria will determine which kind of inductive load bank to install.

    Air-Core: These load banks operate by using coils of wire lacking an electromagnetic core, as the name indicates.

Compared to iron-core variants, they are lighter and more compact because of this construction, but they are also usually more expensive and less efficient.  They are frequently applied in high voltage settings.

  •       Iron-core banks It is the most widely used type, producing an inductive effect by encircling a ferromagnetic iron core with wire coils. The iron core increases the inductance and strengthens the magnetic field; as a result, these are usually more expensive but also heavier and bulkier.

Difference between inductive and capacitive load bank

Inductive and capacitive load banks are both used for testing and simulating electrical loads, but they achieve this in opposite ways:

  • Effect on Current and Voltage:

When the current fluctuates, inductive load bank inductors reject. In the case of an AC system, this causes an electrical lag that follows the current. This “lagging power factor” may cause the power system to lose efficiency even when capacitive load bank capacitors are able to store and release electrical energy. They object to changes in voltage. In an AC circuit, the current hence always precedes the voltage.

  • Utilization:

Inductive banks simulated inductive loads from motors, transformers, and fluorescent lights. They are helpful for testing generators, voltage regulators, and switchgear under these conditions, but capacitive banks are not as common as inductive ones, becoming more important with the rise of electronics that use capacitors. They can be used to improve power factor by counteracting lagging currents from inductive loads.
