Desalination of saltwater is the process of removing salt and other pollutants to create fresh water.

After going through a process of remineralization and chlorination, the freshwater is then kept in tanks before being delivered to the distribution network so that it can be used.

  • Sea water.

This method is successful provided that filters can be utilised to reduce the quantity of pre-treatment that is required before the water can be processed by the primary treatment systems.

Although subsurface input is less harmful to marine life, it can be detrimental to freshwater aquifers in the area if the geology is not favourable. 

Infiltration galleries, vertical beach wells, and radial wells are the three main types of wells used for extracting water from below the surface.

  • Brackish water.

The saltiness of brackish water is far lower than that of seawater, and it is typically located in aquifers, which are underground reservoirs of water, or estuaries, which are lower courses at the point where a river empties into the ocean.
